The National Diversity in STEM Conference, SACNAS 2022, which will take place in San Juan, Puerto Rico, from October 27 to October 29, marks a historic event in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields in Puerto Rico!
What does mentee Andrea Semidei-Rodríguez say about attending this conference?
Vistazo A La Ciencia: Why will you participate in SACNAS?
Andrea: The reason why I will participate in SACNAS is that it is an opportunity to connect with undergraduate and graduate students. Similarly, SACNAS gave me the opportunity to present my research done during my summer internship. In short, SACNAS gives me that space to communicate my research and converse with others within my field.
Vistazo A La Ciencia: What panels or workshops are you interested in attending and why?
Andrea: The panels and workshops I want to attend are: Training, Career Development, and Research Funding Opportunities at NIH, Disability Identity: Finding Community and Supporting Inclusive Environments, and Pursuing Graduate School or Medical School. Enhancing Your Skills and Experiences for Success. The reason why I want to participate in these workshops/panels is that in addition to meeting more people who share similar interests as mine, I will have the opportunity to receive mentorship on these topics directly from professionals. Additionally, the reason why I want to participate is that I want to continue studying Medicine, and I want to obtain the tools to be a good candidate and future professional.
Vistazo A La Ciencia: What do you plan to gain by attending SACNAS?
Andrea: What I plan to gain from attending SACNAS is the experience of presenting a research poster, sharing my experiences with others, increasing my network, and meeting many of the professionals interviewed on Science at a Glance Live Streams.
Vistazo A La Ciencia: What does it mean that a conference like SACNAS is held in PR?
Andrea: What represents that SACNAS is in Puerto Rico is that I can meet many other Puerto Rican scientists and that the members of the conference can see the beauties of our island.

Andrea Semidei-Rodríguez is an undergraduate in Natural Sciences (concentrating in Biology) at the recent University of Puerto Rico in Cayey. He is also part of the Biology Honor Society.
